What Drawings and I/O Lists Should Accompany a Pump VFD Project RFQ?

A useful pump VFD RFQ should include a motor schedule, electrical single-line diagram, control narrative, I/O list and site-condition summary. These documents prevent suppliers from pricing different scopes under similar descriptions.

If complete drawings are not ready, a structured data sheet is acceptable, but all assumptions should be listed and confirmed before the order.

What Information Is Required?

  • Motor schedule with tag number, pump duty, voltage, current, power, frequency and motor type.
  • Single-line diagram showing supply, protection, bypass requirements and panel boundaries.
  • I/O list covering start/stop, pressure feedback, alarms, level switches and remote signals.
  • Control narrative for modes, staging, sleep, alternation and fault response.
  • Cable schedule or at least motor and sensor cable lengths.
  • Site voltage, altitude, temperature, enclosure location and required communications.
  • Quantity, project schedule and required document language.

Selection Example

An RFQ lists six 5.5 kW pump motors but provides no current, voltage or duty tags. Supplier A assumes identical motors and basic local control. Supplier B includes pressure transmitters, remote status and a standby-pump sequence. Their prices cannot be compared fairly.

After the buyer adds the motor nameplates, single-line diagram and I/O schedule, both suppliers can quote the same electrical and control scope. Final drive selection then follows rated current, supply and site conditions, while optional devices remain clearly separated.

Common Mistakes

  • Sending only a pump equipment list with no motor nameplate data.
  • Using “remote control required” without defining signals or protocol.
  • Omitting the boundary between the VFD supplier and panel builder.
  • Failing to identify optional items separately from the base scope.
  • Treating preliminary drawings as approved construction information.
