30kW 400V VFD for a Chilled Water Primary Pump

Engineering reference image; final equipment arrangement must follow the approved design.
A 30kW chilled-water pump requires a 400V three-phase VFD whose output current covers the motor current under continuous HVAC duty. The control method must match the plant design: primary-only variable flow, constant primary flow and primary-secondary systems do not use the same speed-control logic.
Recommended Configuration
| Item | Reference Selection |
|---|---|
| Motor | 30kW, 400V three-phase, 50Hz |
| Pump | Horizontal centrifugal chilled-water pump |
| Control | BMS command or differential-pressure PID |
| Minimum limit | Based on chiller and pump minimum-flow requirements |
| Communication | Hardwired signals or confirmed Modbus RTU |
| VFD | AUSENIST project-specific 400V drive, selected by current |
What Must Be Confirmed?
- Motor full-load current and pump/system curves.
- Chiller minimum and design water flow.
- Sensor location and differential-pressure setpoint strategy.
- Number of chillers and pumps and their staging sequence.
- Plant-room temperature, cabinet cooling and motor-cable length.
Selection Logic
Start with motor current, then check continuous duty and enclosure derating. The BMS should have defined ownership of start, speed/setpoint and fault reset. Minimum frequency must protect the chiller and pump, not merely keep the VFD running. Verify valve authority and sensor placement before PID tuning.
Common Mistakes
- Copying secondary-pump control logic into a primary pump system.
- Reducing flow below the chiller limit.
- Locating the pressure sensor too close to the pump discharge.
- Assuming every 30kW drive belongs to the YS620 or YS820 standard range.
AUSENIST Solution
AUSENIST can supply a project-specific pump drive, interface plan and initial motor/control parameters after reviewing the complete HVAC sequence. The final series and enclosure must be confirmed rather than inferred from smaller standard pump-mounted models.
FAQ
Should the VFD maintain pressure or flow?
That depends on the chilled-water architecture and chiller requirements.
Can the BMS control the VFD by Modbus?
Yes when the selected version and register map are confirmed and communication-loss behavior is defined.
Is energy saving guaranteed?
No fixed percentage is valid without baseline power, load profile and measured operating hours.
