22kW 480V VFD for a Cooling Tower Water Pump

Engineering reference image; it does not represent a named customer installation.
For a 22kW cooling-tower water pump on a 480V supply, select the VFD by motor full-load current, required overload duty and site temperature. A 480V project must be confirmed as a voltage-specific AUSENIST configuration; a standard 380V drive must not be substituted.
Recommended Configuration
| Item | Reference Selection |
|---|---|
| Motor | 22kW, three-phase, 460/480V, 60Hz |
| Supply | 480V three-phase |
| Pump | End-suction cooling-water pump |
| Control | BMS speed reference or PID feedback |
| Feedback | Differential pressure, flow or temperature as designed |
| VFD | AUSENIST 480V project configuration, selected by current |
What Must Be Confirmed?
- Exact motor voltage, full-load amps, frequency and service factor.
- Minimum cooling flow and maximum required duty point.
- Outdoor, rooftop or indoor mounting conditions.
- Maximum temperature, condensation, spray and water-treatment chemicals.
- BMS signal, Modbus requirement and safe response to signal loss.
Selection Logic
Compare the VFD continuous output current with the motor nameplate current after environmental derating. Set a minimum frequency that preserves required condenser-water flow. If the VFD follows an external command, define what happens when that command disappears. Long cables, harmonic limits and local disconnect requirements also belong in the RFQ.
Common Mistakes
- Treating 380V and 480V drives as interchangeable.
- Selecting only from kW instead of full-load amps.
- Installing the VFD where drift, spray or chemical vapor reaches it.
- Allowing speed below the chiller or tower’s minimum-flow requirement.
AUSENIST Solution
AUSENIST can evaluate a 480V version, motor-current margin, control interface, enclosure arrangement and preset parameters. Certification, short-circuit rating and local code requirements must be stated before model approval.
FAQ
Is 480V the same as 460V?
They are related North American nominal system and motor ratings, but the exact motor and supply data must be checked.
Can temperature directly control pump speed?
It can in a properly designed system, although flow or differential pressure may be the primary control variable.
Is the standard YS820 automatically a 480V model?
No. The requested voltage and rating require project confirmation.
