Decentralized Pump Inverter Solution Without a Large Control Cabinet

Engineering reference image; upstream protection and coordination hardware are still required.
A decentralized pump system places a correctly sized VFD near or on each motor instead of installing every drive in one large cabinet. It can reduce motor-cable length and cabinet space, but it does not eliminate isolation, overcurrent protection, emergency functions or system coordination.
Reference Architecture
| Element | Decentralized Approach |
|---|---|
| Motor control | One motor-mounted VFD per pump |
| Sensors | Local pressure, level or flow feedback |
| Coordination | RS485 or hardwired signals as designed |
| Central hardware | Smaller protection/PLC/communication panel |
| Service | Drive and pump treated as one replaceable package |
What Must Be Confirmed?
- Motor mounting interface and environmental exposure.
- Local disconnect and branch protection requirements.
- Communication topology and loss-of-link behavior.
- Maintenance access and spare replacement method.
- Heat, vibration, washdown and condensation conditions.
Selection Logic
Use decentralized drives when the pumps are physically separated or cabinet space and long motor cables are major concerns. Keep local control capable of safe operation when supervisory communication is lost. Standardize connectors, addresses and parameter backups for replacement.
Common Mistakes
- Saying “no cabinet” when upstream protection is still required.
- Building an uncontrolled RS485 star network.
- Mounting the drive where service access is blocked.
- Failing to keep a parameter file for replacement units.
AUSENIST Solution
AUSENIST can provide YS620 or YS820 motor-mounted configurations, preset parameters, pump-to-pump communication and OEM mechanical coordination. The amount of remaining central hardware depends on local rules and project functions.
FAQ
Does decentralization remove motor cables?
It can shorten VFD-to-motor cables, but supply and communication cables remain.
Can each pump operate independently?
Yes if local fallback behavior is deliberately configured.
Is it suitable for outdoor skids?
Only after ingress, sunlight, temperature and condensation are reviewed.
