What VFD Do I Need for a 5HP 230V Borehole Pump?

Engineering reference image; verify the motor nameplate and supply before ordering.
For a 5HP, 230V three-phase borehole motor, choose a 230V-class pump VFD whose continuous output current is at least the motor nameplate current after derating. If the available input is 230V single-phase, the VFD must be approved for single-phase input and the feeder must cover the higher input current.
Recommended Configuration
| Item | Reference Selection |
|---|---|
| Motor | 5HP, 230V three-phase, 60Hz |
| Input | 230V single-phase or three-phase, stated before selection |
| Output | 230V three-phase |
| Pump | Borehole/submersible well pump |
| Control | Constant pressure or tank level |
| Sensor | Pressure transmitter or level devices as designed |
| VFD | AUSENIST 230V-class pump drive, selected by amps |
What Must Be Confirmed?
- Full-load amps, service factor, frequency and motor type.
- Input phase, breaker size and available supply capacity.
- Total motor-cable length and motor insulation requirements.
- Well depth, water level, pump curve and target pressure.
- Dry-run protection and restart rules.
Selection Logic
Do not choose a VFD from 5HP alone. Motor full-load amps vary by design. Review long-cable output protection and grounding. Keep frequency within the pump approval and set a minimum speed that maintains motor cooling and useful flow.
Common Mistakes
- Assuming a single-phase VFD output powers a single-phase motor.
- Ignoring feeder current when using single-phase input.
- Treating well depth as the complete cable length.
- Setting automatic restart without a limit after dry running.
AUSENIST Solution
AUSENIST can match a 230V-class drive to the motor amps, review single-phase input, pressure control, cable length and OEM requirements. Local electrical installation must be completed by qualified personnel.
FAQ
Is 5HP the same as 4kW?
It is approximately 3.7kW, but the motor nameplate amps remain the selection basis.
Can it use a pressure switch instead of a transmitter?
A switch can provide start/stop logic; continuously variable pressure control normally uses an analog transmitter.
Can a 230V VFD run a 460V motor?
Not as a normal configuration. Output voltage must match the motor.
